Say What You Really Mean

Updated: Jul 23

Okay - so apparently - growth just continues?? Ugh. Listen y’all. I went to the lake with my family for three weeks (it’s our only real break and opportunity to shut out the world other than the holidays) and I was seeking restoration and clarity. Annnnd what I got was clarity by way of kicking me in the stomach and smacking me on my ass.

After completing the “Reinvention Series,” I was preparing for some sort of applause? I don’t know what I was expecting, but it certainly was not what the Divine had in store. My “vacation” quickly became a microcosm of a healing journey in and of itself: unpredictable, cyclical, and occasionally tumultuous, like a side quest with lessons I didn’t know I needed.

This unpredictability is what often defines ‘inner work’. Sometimes, after diligently pursuing a goal, we’re sent in a direction we didn’t expect - the lesson of course, taught by experience, not by achievement. As much as I regret to report this reality, it’s true nonetheless: our side quests are the Divine’s way of helping us let go of what no longer serves us, especially when it’s too difficult to release on our own.

So, although it is simple in nature, and certainly not profound - it is the only question left to ask: What is it that you’re really trying to say? This isn’t just about creative expression. It’s about honesty with oneself and others, it’s about dropping the performance and fully inhabiting one’s truth. Whether it’s admitting a desire, confronting a fear, or seeking authenticity in relationships, I suggest that taking this leap - is frankly - unavoidable at this point, but  is also brave and essential.

Another thing I should warn you about (while simultaneously giving myself a pep talk) is that - process is inherently messy. I did beach yoga three mornings a week when I was on “vacation” (weird flex, but stay with me) and through the big emotions and life’s redirections - I was reminded of a gentle parallel. Healing, like yoga, is not about mastery but about repeatedly meeting oneself on the mat. Our growth comes from the practice, from our showing up. I apply this same notion to creativity and confidence: these are not traits, but practices, nurtured day by day. (Rach, go back and read that part again).

Change doesn’t have to be radical. Sometimes, a 10% shift toward more gentleness, stillness, or honesty is transformative. Rather than aiming for an unattainable “one-day” perfection, it’s about micro-evolutions - being a little more real today than yesterday, and letting that energy compound like student loan interest.

Oh, and also, in case it hasn’t been made abundantly clear yet - the only reason I’m able to speak on this so confidently is because I’m moving through it as we speak. Er - as I write - as I - you get the idea. Nearly eight minutes after my TEDx talk went live, my instinct was to critique it harshly. But after reflecting on ‘why was cricisim, my initial reaction? Why not pride or excitement?’ I realized it was because for the first time, I  allowed my most authentic voice to lead. And that’s scary af but even worse - it’s messy. And I’m not comfortable with messy, but I firmly believe that an honest first draft will always be the gateway to something deeper and impactful.

I know you know this, because you’re here - but - our society isn’t designed for truth or vulnerability. For those of us who feel like outsiders or late bloomers, our culture is in desperate need for imperfection. We are in a collective need for genuine self-expression and connection. We need you.

I know this is a big ask, but I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t think you were capable. . . this is a call to collective bravery: to name what we want, to say our truths out loud, and to allow imperfection in the process. Through personal risk comes true growth, and gradually, personal changes ripple into the wider culture.

There is more where this came from. And so much more to do, I know you feel it too. I will remind you once again, as I always do - tune out the noise and tune in to your knowing. And embrace the chaotic, tender, and humorous adventure of becoming.

There’s no going back - only forward, together, in love and honesty. Same time next week? See you then. Love you, mean it.
